She used to live above a laundry mart and a fireman came to her place because one of the machines had caught fire. The fireman had a machine that could see through walls. She asked him if she could look through it and he let her. She looked at the screen on the machine and she could see right through the wall. Her heart sank. She pictured sitting in her place and someone going by with one of those machines, looking through her walls. The thought was scary.
Someone in the laundry mart joked about using the machine to look through people's walls. The fireman said that the machines were issued only to firemen and it had to be logged in and out. She knew better. She knew criminals could get their hands on anything they wanted. With enough cash greasing the right hand, a determined person can get whatever they want.
"There is nowhere to hide," she told B that night. "Absolutely nowhere."
"Why do you need to hide?" he asked
"It's not that I need to hide, it's just that there isn't any privacy anymore. There are cameras everywhere and now they can look right through your wall. Oh my god! What if someone's outside our house with that machine watching us have sex!!!" She was mortified at the thought.
"Don't be stupid," he said. "Who would want to watch us have sex? I'm there and I don't want to watch us."
"Ha ha," she said. "Very funny."
He grinned at her. "I don't know what you're worrying about. You worry about everything. Your imagination goes into overdrive. No one is watching us have sex. Except the angels."
"Stop it!"
"And God."
"Stop it right now. That is a horrible thing to say."
He kept right on grinning. "And your aunt who died ten years ago. She's sticking around for the show."
"Oh my God, that is so cruel. I will never be able to have sex again!"
He laughed and laughed.
She was not amused.
