As she sat beside him in the car, he mentioned he would be driving to Newfoundland to visit his sister. "Drive?" she asked incredulous. "How long is that going to take you?"
"Oh we figure, one day in Quebec, one day in New Brunswick and one day in Nova Scotia, then take the ferry over to Newfoundland," he replied. The we hung in the air like dust covered cobwebs. He didn't say the name of the other person in we and she was too frightened to ask because it might have lead to more information she didn't want to acknowledge.
She knew the other person in we was the boyfriend. He was gay and a while back while speaking to her on the telephone he'd mentioned not having time to see his boyfriend. She'd paused and continued speaking as if he hadn't said the word boyfriend. She hoped the pause hadn't been obvious. She likes to think she is an open-minded, hip person but she'd paused and she'd refused to acknowledge the we so... maybe she isn't so open-minded and hip after all.
